Our team routinely designs and fabricates custom truck decks for oilfield and heavy haul operators. We completed the following project for a client who needed a heavy duty winch tractor capable of recovery operations and equipment transport in Northern Alberta.
The client’s priority was to build a functional heavy duty truck bed that could perform in demanding conditions while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing appearance. Here’s how we worked with them from the beginning to deliver a superior solution to prefabricated alternatives.
Client Background and Industry
Our client operates in the oilfield and heavy haul sectors where recovery equipment and transport capability are essential. They needed a winch tractor built on a Class 8 chassis that could handle the operational demands of remote jobsites in Northern Alberta.
The client selected a Kenworth C500 with a 286 inch wheelbase sleeper cab configuration. This long wheelbase platform provides the stability and cargo capacity required for over the road applications while supporting the weight and stress of heavy duty winch operations.
Our team listened closely to their needs and determined the following project priorities:
- Recovery Capability: The truck needed to accommodate a high capacity hydraulic winch for vehicle and equipment recovery in challenging terrain.
- Durability: All components needed to withstand Alberta climate conditions including extreme cold, road treatments and the constant vibration of off-road work.
- Professional Appearance: The client wanted a truck that performed at the highest level while maintaining a clean and professional finish.
Key Challenges
The operator also had several requirements our team had to factor into the planning process. These included:
- Custom Components: The client required a custom manufactured oilfield bumper and a complete Braden HP65A winch package installation.
- Design Complexity: This build required multiple integrated systems including hydraulic winch operation, secure tool storage, protective chain hangers, deck access stairs and trailer connections. Each component needed to work together without compromising structural integrity.
- Budget Management: Large projects like this require careful cost control. We worked closely with the client during the design phase to ensure specifications met their vision while staying within budget. Any changes midway through a build can be costly, so we invested time upfront to get the design right.
- Timeline Constraints: The project was completed in approximately three months from concept to delivery.
- Compliance Requirements: The build needed to meet CMVSS standards and receive National Safety Mark certification. We ensure this for every truck build we undertake.
Collaboration and Review Process
Our first step was to supply the client with detailed drawings and specifications for the entire project.
Then we reviewed these drawings closely with the client before fabrication began. The client also visited our fabrication facility during the build to see how the project was progressing.
We never start cutting, forming or welding without each client’s explicit approval. This approach reduces risk and helps the client control costs. It also helps our team deliver final results that consistently exceed expectations.
Custom Design and Fabrication Approach
Winch tractor decks require specific features to perform optimally in oilfield and heavy haul environments. Here is how we designed and fabricated each part of the final project to achieve this goal:

Braden HP65A Winch Package Installation
The Braden HP65A is a high performance hydraulic planetary recovery winch with a rated capacity of 65,000 pounds on the first layer of cable. This winch is designed for heavy duty recovery applications. It features a multi-disc brake and a high efficiency hydraulic motor.
Installing a winch of this capacity requires reinforced mounting points that can handle the extreme forces generated during recovery operations. The deck frame was engineered to distribute winch loads across multiple structural members rather than concentrating stress at a single point.

We fabricated custom winch covers with drum closer plates to protect the winch mechanism from debris, ice and road spray. These covers allow the winch to operate reliably in harsh weather conditions while preventing cable damage during transport.
A winch pin rack was also integrated into the deck design to store recovery pins and accessories within easy reach of the winch operator. This eliminates the need for the operator to search through toolboxes during time sensitive recovery operations.

Custom Oilfield Bumper
We manufactured a custom oilfield bumper for this build to provide the client with a superior alternative to prefabricated components. Oilfield bumpers serve multiple functions beyond basic collision protection. They also provide mounting points for lighting, towing hardware and auxiliary equipment while maintaining ground clearance for off road work.

The custom bumper was designed to integrate with the deck structure and match the overall aesthetic of the truck. It was fabricated from high grade steel and finished with protective coatings to resist corrosion from road salt and chemical exposure.
Tool Cabinets With Polished Aluminum Doors
The deck includes side mounted tool cabinets measuring 30 inches high, 24 inches wide and 10 inches deep. Each cabinet features internal shelving and polished aluminum doors with stainless steel hinges and whale tail compression locks.
Polished aluminum provides a professional appearance while offering corrosion resistance and lighter weight compared to steel doors. The whale tail compression locks create a weathertight seal that keeps dust and road debris out of the storage compartments. This seal also prevents moisture from entering these storage areas.
The cabinets were positioned to provide access from either side of the truck without interfering with winch operation or deck workspace. This layout allows the operator to retrieve tools quickly without climbing onto the deck or reaching around other equipment.
Center Toolbox
A center toolbox measuring 42 inches wide, 14 inches high and 10 inches deep was integrated into the deck structure. This toolbox provides centralized storage for frequently used items and keeps them secure during transport.
The center location balances weight distribution across the deck and keeps commonly accessed tools within easy reach from either side of the truck. The low profile design maintains visibility and does not obstruct the operator’s line of sight when working around the deck.
Chain Hangers With Lockable Aluminum Covers
The deck features side load chain hangers on both sides with rear facing boomer hangers. These hangers provide dedicated storage for tire chains, load binders and securing equipment that would otherwise clutter the deck surface or tool cabinets.
All chain hangers are equipped with lockable aluminum covers. These covers prevent theft of expensive chains and binders while keeping them protected from weather and road spray. The covers also prevent loose chains from rattling or shifting during transport, which can cause damage to other equipment or create noise violations.
The 24 inch side load chain hangers and 18 inch rear face boomer hangers were sized to accommodate the specific chain sets and binding equipment used in the client’s operations.
Deck Access Stairs With Anti-Slip Grating
Climbing onto a Class 8 winch tractor deck presents potential safety challenges. This is especially in winter conditions when ice and snow create slip hazards.
We fabricated custom deck access stairs with anti-slip fiber grating to provide safe and reliable access to the deck surface.
The fiber grating allows snow and ice to fall through rather than accumulating on the step surface. This self-cleaning design maintains traction even in freezing conditions and reduces the risk of falls during deck access.
The stairs are positioned to provide convenient access without interfering with winch operation, trailer connections or tool cabinet doors. This placement was determined during the design review process based on insights we gathered about the client’s specific workflow requirements.
Aluminum Fenders and Infill Panels
Aluminum fenders were fabricated and installed to protect the deck components from tire spray and road debris. Aluminum offers corrosion resistance and lighter weight compared to steel fenders while maintaining the structural strength required for heavy duty applications.
Checker plate aluminum infill panels were used in select areas to provide skid resistant surfaces and additional protection for vulnerable components. These panels also contribute to the professional appearance the client requested.
Frame Storage Tray With Lockable Aluminum Lid
A storage tray was integrated into the frame structure with a lockable aluminum lid. This secure storage location is ideal for high value tools or sensitive equipment that requires additional protection beyond standard tool cabinets.
The frame mounted location keeps this storage out of the way while ensuring it remains accessible when needed. The lockable lid provides security and weatherproofing.
Lighting and Electrical Systems
This deck includes:
- Aluminum DOT light box with polished finish
- Rear DOT light bars
- Chain up lights on both sides
- Pull out marker lights installed to meet visibility requirements for wide loads and oversize transport
All lighting components were selected to meet Department of Transportation requirements and were integrated into the deck wiring system for reliable operation.
Proper lighting is essential for oilfield and heavy haul work where vehicles often operate in low visibility conditions or on remote access roads.
Trailer Connections
The deck includes a trailer gladhand and trailer plug mounting plate to support trailer towing operations. These connections were positioned for easy access and routed through the deck structure to protect air lines and electrical cables from damage.
An air operated fifth wheel was also integrated into the build to provide towing capability for semi trailers. The fifth wheel location was engineered to maintain proper weight distribution and comply with axle load requirements.
Material Selection for Alberta Conditions
All components of this deck were built using high grade steel and aluminum selected to withstand Alberta weather conditions.
Alberta’s climate presents several unique challenges for truck fabrication:
- Winter temperatures can drop below negative 40 degrees Celsius
- Road treatments include salt and chemical deicers that accelerate corrosion
- Hailstorms can damage poorly protected surfaces
- Constant freeze-thaw cycles create stress on welds and joints
High grade steel was used throughout the deck frame and structural components. This steel maintains its strength and flexibility at extreme low temperatures where lower grade materials can become brittle and prone to cracking. It also offers superior resistance to corrosion from road salt and chemical exposure.
Protective coatings were applied to all steel surfaces to create a barrier against moisture and chemical attack. These coatings were selected for their performance in cold weather conditions where some finishes can crack or peel due to thermal stress.
Aluminum components including the fenders, door panels, infill sections and covers provide corrosion resistance without requiring paint or additional protective treatments. Polished aluminum maintains its appearance over time and does not rust or degrade when exposed to road salt.
The combination of high grade steel and corrosion resistant aluminum creates a deck that will perform reliably for years in Alberta’s demanding climate conditions.

Outcome and Results
The final product met all operational, compliance and aesthetic requirements. The client was satisfied with the build and spent considerable time sharing photos and videos of their truck on social media.
The completed Kenworth C500 winch tractor demonstrates what is possible when a truck deck is designed for real work with specific goals in mind. The Braden HP65A winch provides 65,000 pounds of recovery capacity. The custom oilfield bumper integrates lighting and towing hardware while maintaining ground clearance. The tool storage system keeps equipment organized and accessible. The protective finishes and material choices ensure the truck will perform reliably in Alberta’s harsh climate.
